Richard and Angel were amazing! Great recommendations! Food was excellent and so were the drinks. Ask for their take on the margarita. Get the cod! Soo good.

Excellent authentic cuisine. Our favorites were Prawn Moilee (which is not yet on their online menu) and Eggplant Kozhambu, and for dessert the Payasam. The service was excellent, and the interior decor is tasteful and allows for privacy between tables. The menu clearly indicates which items people with dietary restrictions need to avoid (e.g. gluten, dairy, egg, etc).

Outstanding Indian food in a comfortable and attractive space. Red Snapper Pollichatu, in banana leaf, Paneer Lababdar, Eggplant Kozhambu all delicious and with distinct and clear flavor profiles. Cashew lemon rice with black mustard seeds also delicious, paratha too. Nonalcoholic mango mojito an excellent accompaniment. Great addition to the neighborhood and if you're in another neighborhood, worth the trip. Easy metro access (near Van Ness/UDC). Excellent and friendly service. Looking forward to returning! Update: another meal, takeout this time, excellent again.

Malabar is absolutely outstanding! We had three delicious seafood appetizers, garlic naan with chutneys and the duck entree with a vegetable side. Neraj is an amazing chef and lovely guy that stopped by the table. Peitra is an excellent guide through the smooth flavors of modern India with lovely wine pairings. Beautiful playful setting with a great bar. Very highly recommend. Will be back often. Neraj

Went to Malabar during restaurant week and had a wonderful time ! The food and drinks were amazing, and the service was even better !! Our server, Richard, was so funny, attentive, and helpful; the manager also came by often (didn’t catch his name) and he was very friendly and kind as well. I specifically recommend the palak chaat and the chai tini :)

2 weeks in and obviously a brand new restaurant is going to have some hiccups. That being said, they ran out of one of our starters so we ended up trying the Cauliflower Bezule and it was so good! The food overall was delicious, we had the halibut and lamb shank as entrees and they did not disappoint. However I cannot leave out the desserts, roasted coconut ice cream (I mean I would go back for this alone) and some kind of chocolate brownie layered thing with a mint chocolate ice cream really surprised us. They went above and beyond service wise to overcome the app running out and the restaurant had a nice ambience and division of spaces that made it feel intimate. Therefore I’m giving this 5 stars across the board.

Food was amazing. Fantastic spice and sauces. Lots of seafood options but we only had the scallop appetizer which was wonderful. Eggplant and Lamb shank entrees were also fantastic. Service was incredible. Everyone was really nice and right there when you needed something.

Across the street from Bread Furst is a South Indian restaurant serving coastal dishes like garlic black cod and scallops with coconut from a James Beard Award-winning chef. One block from the Van Ness-UDC Metro and near easy street parking, Malabar is worth a visit. Open every day from 5-10 p.m., the space is huge with a spacious dining room and bar. Service is on point and the food is very tasty. To help feed two of us, we ordered the palak chaat, scallops, arancini, chicken curry, and garlic black cod. Everything was beautifully presented and full of flavor, but the winners were the scallops, arancini, and palak chaat. If you love Indian food, go here. Its coastal southern style is unique and worth your time.

Had a marvelous dinner at this new Indian restaurant in Van Ness. Highly recommend the Butter Chicken, Palak Chaat, cauliflower bezule, and ragda pattice. The Beetroot Wada was also delicious. Our server was great—attentive and fun.

A delightful addition to the Indian food scene. James Beard winner chef Vikram Sundaram fed us a memorable Palak chaat and authentic Lamb shank Chettinad. Redolent with spice and perfectly cooked lamb. All of the appetisers we tried were good, but the scallops needed some rice or bread to sop up the delicious gravy. A warm inviting entrance leads to several cosy areas like a home in Kerala!
